5 Alarm Fire & Safety Announces Winner of Essay Contest to Win Thermal Imaging Camera
Delafield, Wis., October 31, 2011
Currently 3 of our trucks are over 30 years of which two are being nursed due to the lack of available parts and funding and the other two (12 and 20+) are not much better (non of which has passed a pump test). As far as the hand me down turn out gear, it’s all in need of replacement according to NFPA and the MSA air packs and bottles expire next year. With that said there is no way that we could ever be able to purchase a piece of equipment like a camera that could save a life or even help in reducing property damage.
In the past year we have responded to many fire calls that a camera would have benefited greatly. Of which one involved a subject entrapment in their own home, which lead to a fatality because the blind search impeded this potential save. At another fire, a camera could have pointed out the hot spot that was missed, causing a rekindle that cost the uninsured owner an additional $30,000+ in damages. A camera would have also reduced the property damage of a smoldering fire that was under the main floor but above the ceiling of the basement, (not showing flames or smoke). A camera could have also eliminated a close call where two fire fighters went thought the floor at a home not knowing that the fire was also below them………
The addition of a thermal imaging camera to the Aubbeenaubbee fire department will not make our ageing equipment run better, how ever it adds the potential for us to be able to massively improve our ability to 1. Save the lives of those in distress 2. Decrease property damage (reduce rekindles, put the water where it needs to be) 3. Increase every ones safety. 4. Decreases fire fighter fatigue by lowering the stress level. 5. Reduce the CLOSE CALLS. We have even heard of the cameras at a department 30 miles away being used for searching cornfields for lost children, helping homeowners to locate poorly insulated spots in their home. (What a way to give back to the community). The ability for us to be able to purchase a camera is highly unlikely since we can’t even get the basics. (Turn out gear, trucks, and repairs) Who knows were all it may benefit, we have never had one to use.
As we train each and every volunteer fire fighter we state
“Risk a lot to save a lot, Risk a little to save a little, Risk nothing to save nothing”
The value of a fire fighters life is priceless…..
EVERY ONE must be able to go home or it’s just not worth volunteering.
There fore you must answer each call as if it may be your last.
STOP AND THINK……SAFETY
Thank You
Mike Temme
Aubbeenaubbee Fire Chief
